Another Akhenaten Update

Another Akhenaten Update

Some very bad news about Akhenaten, our wonderful little Siamese cat. His kidneys have failed. Wendy has been hydrating him with Lactated Ringer’s a couple times a day, but we’re not keeping up. Akhenaten is dying. And quickly. The feeling is that tonight, Tuesday January…

A Long Time Coming…

A Long Time Coming…

This update is quite overdue, and for that I apologize. Thanks to my dear old friend Scott for the nudge to write this post. An update on Bean, our dear old dog who is battling liver cancer after beating spleen cancer: She’s hanging in there.…

DESIDERATA by Max Ehrmann

DESIDERATA by Max Ehrmann

This poem really speaks to me, where I am right now. Also, for an aural treat (in all it’s 1970’s production glory), check out this video on YouTube of the late, great Les Crane “performing” the poem.

DESIDERATA
by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all it’s sham drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Thanks to my friend Alicia W. for reminding me of this poem at this time when it really speaks to me. I hope it also speaks to you.

SLIMS/Vout Closed

SLIMS/Vout Closed

It came across the Foodnews wire a couple days ago that SLIMS (and Vout) restaurant on Hamilton Avenue in Northside has closed. Checking their website (www.slimsrestaurant.com) and the outgoing message on their phone confirms the closing (“…please do not leave a reservation”) . It’s sad…

An update on Bean and Akhenaten

An update on Bean and Akhenaten

BEAN: After surviving spleen cancer (and spleen removal) a few months ago, we recently noticed that Bean was once again slowing down. Wendy checked her out and we determined that she’s got liver cancer. On Wednesday, November 10, 2010 we took Bean to Dr. Cheryl…

Vacation, Mexico 2010

Vacation, Mexico 2010

Wendy & I recently got back from a wonderful vacation to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. We were there at the end of October 2010.

Pictures and videos are coming soon. Please stay tuned!

Quick thoughts about our trip…

  • When SCUBA diving, we noticed that the reef in Mexico isn’t as vibrant as we’d hoped it would be. There is plenty of nice (dead) coral formation, but very few fish (with one exception, below). Quite odd.
  • We noticed during our dives that there were LOTS of lionfish. It was the job of the divers to notify our divemasters of any lionfish we saw. The divemasters would then kill the fish.
  • Segway tour around the resort was GREAT fun!
  • The Jungle Place, run by Heidi & Joel, was an AWESOME experience with spider monkeys. REALLY amazing!
  • Coati are really cute and will climb in your lap for some bread.

We certainly enjoyed our travels, but (like always), it’s good to be home.

Y-Peeler

Y-Peeler

This is a picture of a vegetable y-peeler. Sometimes, I need to find this picture when friends ask me what kind of peeler they should purchase to peel vegetables. Most recently, a friend wrote to ask about the best tool for peeling asparagus. This is…
