SnapStream Beyond TV 3.5 released!
After a long development cycle, SnapStream released version 3.5 of their excellent Beyond TV product on Friday, October 8, 2004.
Beyond TV is software that turns your home PC into a personal video recorder (PVR — pronounced “PEE-ver”, rhymes with ‘beaver’) that records your selected television/satellite/cable programs to your computer’s hard drive and plays them back at your convenience. You can schedule shows over the internet, mark commercials, record one show or the whole season, watch one recorded show while recording another, set ‘scouts’ to alert you when a show is on, and much more… If you install multiple tuner cards into your computer, you can record multiple shows at one time (all while watching another recording at the same time) — even on modest computer hardware.
I’ve been a beta-tester for SnapStream since November 2002 and have contributed several suggestions that have been implemented. The folks working on the product are a great bunch with a sincere interest in creating the best solution they can.
Beyond TV has truly changed the way we watch television in our house. For one thing, it’s more efficient — we can watch a half-hour show in about 24 minutes with all the commercials skipped. Frequently, even if we’re home, we’ll “let the PVR get it” and watch the show later, skipping commercials. A friend that has a TiVo told me that the quality of the recorded shows is better than what they get with their TiVo.

This software sounds very interesting. I have a Tivo already, but would like to try this upstairs. Does the satellite cable plug directly into the video capture card, or is there some other device such as a satellite box that it hooks into. Thanks for the info.
It’s great software. We love it because it is so much more expandable than a Tivo… We’ve got over half a terrabyte of storage here!
The satellite line comes into your home, through whatever decoder box it requires, and into the video capture card.
